Dryopteris tokyoensis
(Matsum. ex Makino) C.Chr.
Tokyo Wood Fern
Dryopteridaceae
Dryopteris tokyoensis is a species of fern in the family Dryopteridaceae. It is native to southeastern China and Japan, and is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental.
Description
Dryopteris tokyoensis grows up to 110 cm tall and has erect rhizomes. Rhizomes are covered with broadly lanceolate, brown scales. Leaves are pinnate-pinnatifid, oblong-lanceolate. The blade is 60 to 85 cm long and 12 to 15 cm wide, on a 20 to 25 cm long, scaly stipe. The base of the leaf is narrowed, and the tip is pointed. Fronds have 30 to 40 pairs of leaflets; the leaflets are narrowly lanceolate. Leaflets are up to 8 to 9.5 cm long and 1.2 to 1.6 cm wide, slightly uneven at the base, shortly stalked, pointed at the tip. Basal leaflets are shorter, about 4 cm long. Leaflets are divided into finely toothed or smooth-edged, rounded lobes. Leaves are slightly hairy above and below, with a few fibrous scales on the midrib below. The midrib is covered with dark brown, linear scales. Sori are borne on one row near the midribs near the tip of the fronds; indusia are roughly round (Wu et al. 2013).
Dryopteris tokyoensis is distinguished from other species by its shallowly lobed leaflets, that have extended, rounded lobes at the base (Hoshizaki and Wilson 1999).
