Dryopteridaceae

Dryopteris namegatae is a species of fern in the family Dryopteridaceae. It is native to Japan and southern China.

Description

Dryopteris namegatae grows up to 80 cm tall and has erect rhizomes. Rhizomes are covered with broadly lanceolate, dark brown scales. Leaves are pinnate, oblong-lanceolate. The blade is 14 to 45 cm long and 12 to 18 cm wide, on a 12 to 35 cm long, scaly stipe. The base of the leaf is slightly narrowed, and the tip is shortly pointed. Fronds have 15 to 30 pairs of leaflets; the leaflets are narrowly lanceolate but slightly uneven at the base. Leaflets are up to 6 to 9 cm long and 1.1 to 1.4 cm wide, alternate, shortly stalked, pointed at the tip. Basal leaflets are slightly shorter. Leaflets are coarsely toothed with a truncate base. Leaves are covered with a few black scales on the midrib below. The midrib is covered with dark brown, linear scales. Sori are borne on 2 or 3 rows on each side of the midribs near the margins; indusia are brown and roughly round (Wu et al. 2013).

Dryopteris namegatae is similar to Dryopteris cycadina, and may be a hybrid between that species and Dryopteris dickinsii, showing intermediate characteristics (Hoshizaki and Wilson 1999).
